Money or Calling?
I think there are two reasons you might want to do a job: money or calling. That is, you either want the job because you feel it’s what you should do with your life, like it’s going to make the world a slightly better place, and it’s less like you have to do it and more like you should be doing it. Then, you might want to do a job because you want the money. It could be that you need the money to survive or you want more money to improve your life or to be able to do more. And those two are not mutually exclusive. And they are both ok.

Payment Structure
I’ve heard and read a lot recently about how companies structure their payments, which employees get what and how much should a CEO be paid. For one thing, I agree with California trying to enforce a maximum difference between a CEO’s salary and lowest paid employee. I don’t think it should be compared to the average salary but the median but it’s a good direction. I know that the community sharing type of structure isn’t for everyone but I like the idea of employees sharing in the benefits of a company like the way pirates divvy up treasure: everyone gets one part. Maybe team leaders get two or three parts. Higher management gets five or six parts. The chief officers might get eight or even ten parts. The point is, after you determine how many parts there are, you divide the revenue. This way, even the lowliest employee benefits when the company is doing better. The top brass earn the most because they do the hardest work, but every employee is invested — and rewarded — in the company being successful.

העולם הסתדר לפי תחומי עניין
כבר הרבה זמן אני אומר: זה לא שאני לא מספר לאנשים מה קורה איתי כי אני לא רוצה. אני לא עושה את זה כי אין לי כוח להבדיל. בדרך כלל, כשאני רוצה לדבר על משהו, יש כמה וכמה אנשים שמעניין אותי לדבר איתם על זה אבל הם נמצאים ב-3-4 מעגלי היכרות שונים שלי. אז אין לי כוח לפנות לכל אחד בנפרד ולנהל 20 שיחות שונות על אותו הדבר. אני מעדיף להגיד את זה רק פעם אחת. תכלס, זה מה שהרשתות החברתיות מאפשרות, לפנות לקבוצת אנשים שחולקים איתי תחום עניין, לא משנה מאיפה אני מכיר אותם, ולדבר איתם על נושא שקשור לתחום העניין הזה. ואם זה משהו אישי, אני פשוט כותב את זה כאן אם זה ארוך או ישירות על הדף שלי ברשת החברתית אם זה יחסית קצר. בכל מקרה, אם אני כותב את זה פה, אני אחלוק לרשת החברתית ואז אפשר להגיב לי במקסימום שני מקומות. זה כל העניין. והעובדה, שהרבה שיחות שבעבר היו מתנהלות במישור פרטי מתנהלות על פני רשתות חברתיות בפני מאות ואלפי אנשים, אומרת לי שאני לא היחידי שמרגיש ככה.

מבחן תבונה
שמתי לזה קצת יותר לב לאחרונה, בעיקר אחרי שראיתי עוד כמה מבחני IQ ברצף הדברים שאני קורא. ואז קרה מקרה שקשור אליי שגרם לי לחשוב על זה יותר. אני לא אציין יותר כדי לא לחשוף פרטים מזהים מסיבה שמיד אסביר. מבחני IQ הם לרוב בולשיט. כבר היו מחקרים שהראו את זה שגם אם בודקים רק את פלח השוק המסוים לו המבחן נבנה, הוא עדיין דיי גרוע באמידת היכולת המחשבתית של האדם. וזה אם לא מתייחסים לסוגים שונים של תבונה ויכול להיות שאנשים מסוימים גרועים בדברים ‘הנחשבים’ אבל מאוד מוצלחים בדברים אחרים. איך שאני רואה את זה, תבונה גבוהה יותר היא היכולת להרכיב הרבה פרטים קטנים לתמונה גדולה ולהסיק את המסקנות לפני שהן נהיות ברורות או מפורשות. אבל אם אני מתחיל לדבר על כך שדברים מסוימים ברורים לי מהר מאוד והם קולטים את זה רק מאוחר יותר, זה נתפס כהתנשאות. אבל אני לא אוהב להתנצל על זה. בחזרה למקרה, שבגלל הבעיה הזאת לא אציין פרטים בכלל. הצטברו מספר פרטים. נקרא להם פרטים 1 עד 4. אני חשבתי שהם מספיקים בשביל להסיק את המסקנה. אני אפילו יכול להסביר בדיוק איך הסקתי את המסקנה הזאת ולמה אין אפשרות סבירה אחרת. אבל גם כשהצטברו פרטים 5 עד 7, כשציינתי את המסקנה שלי, היו עדיין אנשים שהופתעו ממנה, שאמרו שהם עדיין היו חלוקים בינה לבין אפשרות אחרת. אז אני פה עכשיו, מדבר לעצמי. מעולם לא הייתי באמת מאוד מוצלח בלימודים. בית הספר היסודי היה קל כי הדברים שם בסיסיים. הבנתי אותם מהר מאוד. בלשנן תמיד הייתי גרוע. בית הספר התיכון היה גם דיי קל לי. Y Gen vs. Millennials
I keep hearing the talks about Millennials. First of all, I dislike the term. I dislike the whole generational segregation thing. I think it’s stupid and arbitrary and doesn’t really help anyone with anything. But let’s say we agree that it is, indeed… a thing. The Millennials are one of the biggest generations on the list, some pegging it as children born between the years 1980 and 2004. But this is not 1920 when there was the recession and that’s it; or 1940 when there was a World War and that’s it. I mean, those are big things but you know what happened between 1980 and 2004? Home computers, cellular phones, the internet, smart phones. And each of those are a huge thing of itself. I was born in 1984. I had a Commodore 64 when I was 6. It wasn’t much but it was much. Someone born in 1988 probably already started with an almost completely graphical user interface. Someone born in 1990 already had a rudimentary internet at their disposal by the time they could read and write. Someone born in 1994 could already see many people around them with a phone in their pocket and have a constantly on internet connected PC in their home. Someone born in 2000 probably had a phone from childhood and could see the encroachment of smartphones. And someone born in 2004-5 probably considered a “smartphone” as just… well, a phone, and have a constantly on internet connected phone in their pocket. Continue Reading →

מקרים מכתיבים התנהגות
כשיצאתי אתמול מהעבודה, ניגש אליי מישהו במגרש חנייה. הוא לא נראה כמו מישהו מאיים במיוחד אבל התגובה הראשונה שלי הייתה לנעול את הדלתות של האוטו. הוא התקרב וסימן לי שהוא רוצה לדבר איתי אז פתחתי קצת את החלון. הוא שאל אם יש לי כבלים. היו לי אבל לא רציתי לשקר למרות שהייתי יכול והוא לא היה יודע. בסוף פלטתי משהו על זה שאני לא בטוח שהמצבר של האוטו שלי יעמוד בזה. וכשהוא הלך, הרגשתי קצת רע על זה שלא עזרתי. האם מאז התאונה שלי, אני חושש מאנשים זרים שפשוט ניגשים אליי? במיוחד בהקשר של מכוניות? אם הוא היה פשוט עומד ליד האוטו שלו עם מכסה מנוע פתוח, האם הייתי מציע עזרה? זה קצת מעצבן אותי ששני פוצים שלא אהבו את איך שעקפתי אותם גרמו לי לכזה שינוי בהתנהגות. אבל מצד שני, יש לי כל כך הרבה להפסיד. ומדינת ישראל של היום היא מקום שבו מישהו יכול לדקור אותך ברחוב בגלל שטויות.

No Man’s Sky is an Introvert’s Game
According to Steam, I have played for 36 hours since the game came out. I’ve got my Atlas Pass v1. I’ve only jumped a few systems so far. I’m still using the Omega bonus ship. I’ve installed about a dozen mods. That’s the sad part. That I like the game. I’m enjoying it. But I can’t deny all the complaints. I know exactly what they’re talking about. I can feel it too to a degree. And I’ve installed those mods to breathe a bit more life into it, still hopeful that the devs will add more content in the future. And after thinking about it, for just a few hours (not 36), I think No Man’s Sky is an introvert’s game. It’s not about a glorious adventure through the stars where you team up with your friends to take out pirates, track down Alosaurus size fauna, run and blast sentinels while doing… I don’t know what. No Man’s Sky is chill. It’s slow. It’s relaxed. It’s existential. Yes, there are hundreds of thousands of players out there. Every planet has hundreds of stations with about 4 out of 10 containing an alien. And the stations have an alien. And every ship has an alien. A single alien. Alone, sitting in solitary, interacting through barely understandable dialect and sometimes through a counter or even a view screen. ויכוחים ואלימות
הקומיקס Leftover Soup בדרך כלל מאוד חכם אבל הפעם הרגשתי באמת את הצורך להגיד משהו על ה-strip האחרון. בעיקר על הערות המאייר שבו. דבר ראשון, יש שם את הסיפור הקטן על אנשים שמתווכחים על דברים חשובים בשקט כי מי שמרים את הקול, מי שמשתמש באלימות (כי אפשר לטעון שלהרים את הקול זה סוג של אלימות שמיעתית), מיד מפסיד את התחרות הלוגית. זה מאוד מעניין ואני חושב שאני מאוד בעד. קודם כל, כי אני חושב שבדרך כלל אין טעם להרים את הקול אלא אם כן אתה נמצא במקום שלא שומעים אותך ואי אפשר לעבור למקום שקט יותר. אבל מצד שני, כי ככה, כמו ב-debate, השימוש באלימות (או אפילו בסמכות גבוהה יותר כדי לבטל את השני) מהווה סוף מוגדר לקו הלוגי שמעבר לו אין מה להוסיף. לעומת זאת, אני לא מסכים עם ההמשך שהעובדה שצד אחד מפסיק להתווכח לפני הצד השני אומר שהצד השני בהכרח ניצח. יכול להיות שהצד הראשון הציג טיעון אחד שהוא יותר חזק מעשרה אחרים. כי, אם אני מצביע למעלה ואומר, תראו השמיים כחולים, זה יותר טוב מעשרה טיעונים דביליים אחרים שלא כוללים הבחנה בעובדות בשטח. כמו כן, ויכוחים על מוסר הם תמיד יהיו, ובכן, ויכוחים על מוסר. יכול להיות שלצד אחד יש סיבות מאוד הגיוניות למה הצד השני (וכל המשפחה שלו) צריכים למות אבל מדובר פה, כנראה, במערכות ערכים ובסיס לויכוח שונים לחלוטין בין שני הצדדים. ואם יש דבר אחד שצריך בשביל לנהל ויכוח זה הסכמה על איזה שהוא בסיס. בכל מקרה, אם נניח רגע בצד את ‘נגמרו לי הטיעונים’ ו’בסיסים שונים’, אני כן חושב שלהפעיל אלימות כלשהי Continue Reading →

Remember Remember…
This is usually the day we remember The Gun Powder Treason and Plot, a staple of civil disobedience and unrest. It is good to remember that it is not only our privilege but our duty to take responsibility for our state and how it’s run. And we’re not talking only about elections. It is also the day I remember Yitzhak Rabin, now dead for two decades, who is still, in my opinion, the last decent leader we had in this country. And no one has yet been able to fill his shoes. And this year, because the previous two were recurring topics of conversation between us, I remember Keren Embar. She wasn’t here last November too. I regret we can never have those conversations again. I don’t have time or presence of mind to write any more but check past November 5th post for ramblings of the same nature.
