The Ups and Downs of Growing Up

Eran

I’m sure you’ve all seen this recently. Kids are growing up faster. Wether we like it or not, the age of mental maturity is going down at an alarming rate with no consequence for physical maturaity. It is actually approaching the age of maturity perceived and required of boys and girls in old times.

You’ve all probably seen the news in the past months. Teenage boys molest other teenage boys. Rape is a common thing around the age of 14. Kids bring knives to school. 10-year-olds get kitchen knives and stab 6-year-olds. And the one that bothered me most was the brutalness of kindergarden children.

What You See is What You Are

It occured to me yesterday at work… People are different. People see things differently.
Yes, it’s quite a shock, I know but listen anyway. Think about it for a moment. Why is this guy a comedian and why is this guy a soldier?

The answer is simple. They see things differently. A comedian is a good comedian if he looks at something and see what humor he can get from it. The soldier is a good soldier if he looks at something and sees tactics, weak spots, entry points and so forth.

Bash ‘em In

Lately, I’ve received a quote from a website called Bash.org which is a hive for IRC quotes. I’ve been reading it for the past few days and I’ve been shitting my pants laughing. If anyone is e-mailing me, you’ll see some quotes pop up but this one I just had to put up right now.

It’s Draw Bat-Girl Day!

Eran

Well, it was 3 days ago. Some bloke started it all. His buddy tried too. Then some others did it and voila: In two days you have over 500 bat-girls. Some are really sucky but some look really cool. (Kudos to the Dark Establishment for bringing it to my attention)

Of course, I can’t draw to save my life. But I have Hero Machine. And thus, the result:

“Dana, my darling, I’m writing to you…”

Sorry, you know I’ll always love that song. So, how are things back home? I hope my parents are treating you well. I apologize in advance for writing in English. The terminals here don’t have a Hebrew interface. How are your studies going along? I hope you’re not making it too difficult on your teachers. And tell David he owes me 10 nis. He’ll know what it is about.

Today on the Less Interesting Times we have a new and refurbished edition. Coming to you live in five.

The top stories are as follows:

Over 2,000 kids in Israel last year arrived at the brink of hospitalization becuase of parent abuse. Somehow, not enough people see it as severely and the situation continues.
What the fuck is wrong with people? We’re talking about a child of 3 to 7 years old who is beaten by his father or mother to the point where serious medical attention is needed. Does it not strike anyone as particulary wrong? Because it sure pisses the hell out of me.

The Stone

Eran

In the modern Hebrew society, I don’t know if the custom is originally Jewish or not, it is customary to place a stone on a person’s grave as a show of respect. If I am not mistaken, that custom is evident in Steven Spielberg’s famous film – Shindler’s List. It is even evident on Schindler’s grave itself, in Jerusalem, for it is covered with piles upon piles of stones.

I only mention this because today is the one year anniversary of the death of Asaf Nomkin.

Asaf was my friend. We enlisted together. We trained together. We served together. One year ago, he was found shot dead in a tent in the Balish training camp. They said it was suicide but to this day I still can think of any reason a person like him would want to kill himself.

I won’t bother you with the “Same blood, same mud” or “He such a good and happy person” speeches because I’m sure you’ve heard all of them before. But just think back to all those speeches and all those words and forget that you thought they were bullshit. And know that for this man, they were all true.

Asaf was a true loss to humanity. I can say for certain that him leaving made the ‘Contentment’ and ‘Humorous’ averages in the world drop significantly. Forget about everything else and just remember him. He was truely extra-ordinary.

And so, according to tradition…

Asaf, this one’s for you.

The Weirdness of Geek

Life, Memes and Stuff, Role-Playing Eran

Here’s a letter segment I cut off of a discussion on the Dark Dungeons e-mail discussion group…
“Yesterday I was talking to some neighbors and the topic of “Lord of the Rings” came up. I took the opportunity to mention my hobby: RPGs.
The response shocked me. They said to me “Hey isn’t that for nerds and weird people?”
I ended up showing my neighbors some of my D&D books and explained to them how the game works, then I asked them if they still felt it was geeky. They said “No”.
I think the major problem we gamers have is that we are closet gamers. When asked at work what our hobbies are we choke up, feeling that if we revealed what we do for fun we will be ridiculed or scorned.
WE seriously need to get out of the closet. There is nothing wrong with our hobby, trust me there are much worse things we can be doing.”

This Isn’t Over Yet

You Are A: Chaotic Good Human Barbarian

Alignment:
Chaotic Good characters are independent types with a strong belief in the value of goodness. They have little use for governments and other forces of order, and will generally do their own things, without heed to such groups.

Race:
Humans are the ‘average’ race. They have the shortest life spans, and because of this, they tend to avoid the racial prejudices that other races are known for. They are also very curious and tend to live ‘for the moment’.

Primary Class:
Barbarians live outside the ‘civilized’. They have tribal goverments, and are often nomads. What they may lack in refinement is balanced by there strength of individual character and ability to survive.
