Gifted – Avatar: The Tailor, Part 1

Avatar tried to keep his pace on the treadmill, seeing that there is still another ‘incline’ before the program ends. Impact sat on a padded chair beside him, her feet on the dumbbell rack next to the wall. She looked over a very big file full of documents and pictures. The continuous noise of the treadmill motor and Avatar’s foot impacts on the belt didn’t seem to bother her.
“What… are you… reading?” He asked.
“The mission brief,” Impact answered and flipped another page.
“We were… already… briefed.”
“I like to be prepared.”
“I didn’t… expect that…”
“What? That if I don’t say a lot that I don’t think either?” She raised an eyebrow at Avatar in the mirror. “That just because I’m this team’s muscle means I don’t have a brain? I finished high school with honors. I’m doing pre-med courses in my spare time.”
“You want… to be… a doctor?”
“Always interested me, both the field in general and also helping people. But after two years with the Nottrim, I’m thinking maybe specialize in some kind of forensic medicine.”
“Ah-ha…” Avatar said, still processing what she just said.
“Yeah. And if you say that to anyone outside the team, I will break all the bones in your body. Ok?” Impact smiled so widely that you might mistake her expression for someone who wants to give you a big cake.
Avatar returned an artificial, frightened smile, sure she’s dead serious but unsure if she really intends to follow through. “So… I don’t get… why… we can’t just… practice with… my light power. Isn’t that… enough?”
“Do you need me to remind you what Dr. Livenstein said? You were there.”

“No. It’s not enough,” Dr. Livenstein said. He stood in front of the board in one of the briefing rooms. Even though it was unnecessary, he still wore his white coat. Static half stood, half sat on a table near the wall, her arms crossed as always, and the rest of the team sat in the chairs in the front row. “It’ll help but you will still have to do this program. Because how a Gifted body works, just using your abilities, even if they’re new to you, like you Avatar, it’s roughly equivalent to doing simple math or pick up a ball off the floor. While I know Shutdown’s ability, for example, so I can give him a program that will quickly stretch his limits, we don’t yet know enough about yours to do it in the time we have. I still expect you to come to your regular check ups so we can see what you’re capable of but, besides that, the gym, at least two hours aerobics and cutting exercises, at least three times a week.”

“He said… three times… a week. This is… the fifth,” Avatar said in his defense.
“He said at least,” Impact lifted one finger without looking at him. “And I know Static wants to move as fast as possible. Trust me that I know how to make you lose weight as fast as possible.”
“Really? How much… exercise… do you do?”
“Honestly, not a lot,” Impact said and smiled at him. “You were probably already told that Gifted have a metabolism that’s about 1.5 times faster than a regular person, to handle the extra abilities’ energy demands. So for me it’s closer to twice as fast. I’m also strong enough to easily bench press two hundred…”
“I’ll believe you… that’s a lot.”
“But because of the amount of energy my power demands, I need a lot more calories. That’s why I eat so much.”
“I was wondering… about that… and the carrots,” Avatar added.
Impact snickered. “What? I like carrots? Nothing wrong with that. It’s a healthy vegetable, it works the mouth muscles, and the worst thing it does is orange pee if you eat too much.”
“And if…” Avatar started asking, but saw the look on her face that said she could explain her power or she could show him, and stopped himself.
“My ability is…” Impact paused for a second, retrieving the exact quote from her memory, “Projection of focused kinetic pressure waves. Do you know what a shaped charge is?”
“No.”
“So imagine… a lamp producing enough light to fill a room and then a laser with the same power but focused to a really small beam. So if the lamp is a bomb, I’m the laser.”
“Oh… wow… Oh no… Oh no…” Avatar said as the treadmill started increasing the incline, going into the final stretch.
“Come on! Don’t chicken out!” Impact stood up and pressed the button to raise the incline another half a degree.
Avatar gritted his teeth and his face turned redder. “I hate you! I hate this whole team! I hate Dr. Livenstein! And I hate all the Nottrim!”
Impact leaned on the treadmill display and got in his face. “Come on! Come on! Give it all you got!”
“Ahh!…” Avatar focused anything he had left, mostly shreds of will power, and ran the rest of the section. He screamed, stopped to take a breath, and kept screaming, before the program finished.
The treadmill slowed and so did Avatar, until it stopped and Avatar walked backwards, crashing on the padded floor. He breathed heavily, trying to regulate his thumping heartbeat.
Impact stood over him, the file under her arm pit. “Feeling better?”
“Yes… and no…”
“Good. Drop your height by five centimeters, redistribute the weight, and let’s go grab lunch.”
