מחוננים – אואטר: זיקית (3), חלק י’ / Gifted – Avatar: Chameleon (3), Part 10
אואטר, הדף, הדממה, וסטטית ישבו באחת מחדרי הישיבות הזמינים לנוטרים. דוקטור ליבנשטיין עמד מול הלוח המחיק והסתכל עליהם. “לטובת החדשים יותר מבינינו שאולי עוד לא שמעו את זה, הנה קצת מבוא למחוננים א’,” הוא אמר וחייך. “אנחנו לא יודעים את המקור של המוטציה הזאת או מתי היא התחילה, כי קשה לנהל מחקר כזה ועדיין לשמור על הסודיות שאנחנו צריכים, אבל אנחנו כן יודעים שיש כמה הבדלים מאוד מסוימים בין מחוננים לבני אדם רגילים.” הוא עצר לרגע את שטף הדיבור כדי לצייר שתי דמויות מקל על הלוח.
“למקרה ואתם תוהים, לא. עדיין לא מצאנו מחונן בלי יכולת על-אנושית כלשהי ועם מערכת דפוקה לחלוטין. הייתם חושבים ששינוי גנטי כזה יגרום לבעיות אבל…” הוא משך בכתפיו. “אנחנו עוד לא יודעים למה. אבל כן אפשר לזהות את ההבדל הביולוגי או, כמו סטטית פה, את ההבדל המנטלי.” הוא צייר שלושה קווים ליד הדמות הימנית. אחד בגובה מרכז הגוף, אחד בגובה הראש ועוד אחד מעליו. “אם זה עוזר לכם, תחשבו על איך מחשב עובד: יש את החומרה הפיזית…” הוא כתב ‘Bioware’ על הקו הנמוך. “או כמו שאנחנו אוהבים להתייחס אליה. יש את התוכנה…” הוא כתב ‘Wetware’ על הקו השני ליד הראש של הדמות. “או בשם החיבה המקצועי שלה. ואז…” הוא נקש על הקו העליון עם העט שלו. “יש את זה. אין לנו עדיין שם מתוחכם לזה. אני לא אדם רוחני במיוחד אז אני אמנע מהשימוש במילה ‘נשמה’…” הוא עצר לרגע ואז חייך חיוך קטן,” מעכשיו, אבל ההנחה הנוכחית שלנו, מבחינת כמה שהמדע מבין את התהליכים, היא שמה שהופך אותך לאתה יחודי אלו התבניות המשתנות שרצות על אותן תוכנה וחומרה. סוג של… המצב הקיים הנוכחי של תוכנה רצה. ומחונן יכול להיות פיזי, מנטלי, או… כזה.”
הוא הסתכל על ארבעתם לוודא שכולם עדיין עוקבים. סטטית גם הפנתה את מבטה על השאר כי היא כבר ידעה את החלק הזה. הדממה ואואטר נתנו את מיטב תשומת ליבם בעוד הדף נשענה לאחור, נראית משועממת אבל סטטית ידעה שזה מצב המנוחה שלה אז זה בסדר.
“הדף פה, למשל,” ד”ר ליבנשטיין החווה לכיוונה, “היא מחוננת פיזית. היכולת שלה טמונה בגוף שלה. אם רוצים להשפיע על היכולת שלה, צריך להשפיע על הגוף שלה. ההנחה שלי בהתאם למה שאני יודע על הכוח שלך, אואטר, הוא שאם תשתלט על הגוף שלה ואז תחזור לשלך, דבר לא ישתנה. לעומת זאת, עם שני האחרים, המצב נהיה מורכב יותר ולפעמים קשה מאוד להפריד ביניהם. סטטית היא כנראה מנטלית והדממה הוא כנראה… אה… תבניתי. איך זה משנה אם אואטר ינסה להשתלט עליהם? אני לא באמת יודע. זה אחד הדברים שמעניין אותי לחקור. אני כן בטוח, בסבירות מאוד גבוהה, שיכולת שינוי הצורה של זיקית היא פיזית ולכן–“
“אם אני עוזב את הגוף הזה,” אואטר נכנס לדבריו, “היכולת הזאת לא תבוא איתי. זאת אומרת, אם אני אי פעם רוצה לעזוב את זה, אני צריך קודם להבין איך אני משנה מישהו אחר.”
“וזה גם אומר,” סטטית הוסיפה, “שכרגע אתה תמיד צריך לחזור לזה בסוף כי אנחנו צריכים את היכולת הזאת.”
אואטר השפיל את מבטו. הוא לא אהב לחשוב על להישאר עם היכולת הזאת לנצח, וכל הבעיות שהיא כרגע גורמת לו, אבל הבין לגמרי את הצורך המבצעי ואת היתרונות שזה מביא לצוות שלו.
Avatar, Impact, Shutdown, and Static sat in one of the Nottrim meeting rooms. Doctor Livenstein stood in front of the whiteboard and looked at them.
“For the newbies among us that may not have heard of this, here’s a little Intro to Gifted A,” he said and smiled. “We don’t know where this mutation came from or when it started. It’s hard to have the large study we need and still keep it a secret. But we do know that it’s genetic and we can point to certain physiological differences between Gifted and the normative baseline.”
He stopped for a moment to draw to stick figures on the board.
“In case you’re wondering, no. We still haven’t found a Gifted with some kind of superhuman ability and a completely messed up physical system. You’d think this kind of genetic leap would cause other issues but…” He shrugged. “We still don’t know why. But we can see the biological differences, like with Impact,” He gestured towards her, “Or the neuro-chemical differences, in the case of Static or Shutdown.”
He drew three horizontal lines next to the right stick figures, one next to the torso, one next to the head, and one more above it.
“If this helps you, think about how a computer works,” Static and Impact shrugged. Shutdown and Avatar smiled. Livenstein continued, “We have the physical hardware or as we like to call it…” He wrote ‘Bioware’ on the lowest line. “Then we have the software or by its professional nickname…” He wrote ‘Wetware’ on the middle line. “And then…” he tapped the third line with his marker, “We have this. We don’t have a clever name for this yet. I’m not a very spiritual person so I will not call it ‘Soulware’…” He trailed off as he remembered an old personal joke and smiled, “But our current assumption, as far as Gifted Science understands these processes, what makes your own unique You are the changing patterns of information and signals inside this software,” He put his marker to the middle line, “Running on this hardware,” He pointed to the bottom most line. A kind… current active state of the running software. And a Gifted can be physical, mental, or… this,” He looked at the top line and then turned to his audience to see if they were following.
Static also turned to look at the rest because she already knew all of this. Shutdown and Avatar were leaning forward with their full attention while Impact was leaning back, her hands behind her head, her legs on another chair in front of her. She looked bored but Static knew it was her resting state and didn’t comment.
“Impact here, for example,” Livenstein gestured to her again, “Is a physical Gifted. Her physiology is significantly different than normal people. To affect her ability, you need tot affect her body. My assumption based on what I know of you, Avatar, is that if you take over her body and then back to yours, nothing will change. However, with the other two, the situation becomes more complicated and, again, without more in-depth research, it’s hard to tell. Static is probably mental. It’s her brain structure that allows her to do what she does. And Shutdown is most likely… eh… a Pattern Gifted. What does it matter if Avatar tries to take their body? I really don’t know. It’s one of the things I’m most intrigued by. I am sure, with very high confidence, that Chameleon’s ability is physical and therefor—”
“If I leave this body,” Avatar interjected, “This ability won’t come with me. That is, if I ever want to leave it, I need to figure out how to change someone else.”
“It also means,” Static added, “That you always have to come back to that body because we really need this ability.”
