The LIT Address

On friday was the final all-camp party. I was on duty from 14:00 to 22:00 so I came in a little late. There isn’t much to say about it. It was similiar to other parties. They took over the Senior Village Lodge. A.J., the radio guy, was DJing inside. The Senior Village Head Specialists were serving water and milkshakes. There was a TV running a movie that recaps days of the summer. The dance floor was flooded with smoke and dancing kids. Outside they had games and snacks. And it was on the point of freezing.

On the night before, the LITs had a last party all by themselves. I had night duty so I just stopped by to say hello. A while later, when they were back in their lounge, I went there for some goodbyes and group pics. I also read them something they later asked me to print so here it is, pretty much as I said it…

The LIT Address – 10/08/2006

You want some words to live by? Here are some words to live by.

Camp is a wonderful place. What you have here, as far as I know, is unparalleled anywhere in the world. You shouldn’t be crying. You did a great job and you had a great time and you should be glad for it. Even if, for now, it’s over.

But if you think the ride is over, you’re wrong. There’s a whole world waiting for you out there. And it’s not like camp at all. If you think the apocalypse is coming with thunder and lightning, with nukes and disease, you’re also wrong.

The apocalypse is right there in unemployment and murder, in corruption and greed. It’s kids like you who can’t afford this wonderful place you call “summer camp”. And when good people do nothing, that is evil enough. And heroes don’t leave the world the way it is, they fight to change it.

So when you see a man go down, pick him up. Don’t leave anyone behind. When the storm hits, chip in. Help those who can’t help themselves. And bring that beautiful spirit of yours everywhere you go.

You have a great life, don’t waste it.
