Gifted – Avatar: The Tailor, Part 4
“You want to do what?” Dr. Livenstein asked in the greatest astonishment that a doctor who worked with Gifted for several years can gather.
“I don’t want to,” Avatar said. “Shutdown suggested.”
Everyone looked to the tall, lanky Gifted.
“I didn’t drag him in by force carrying an axe. I just had an idea! We’re trying to drop his weight quickly so it’ll be more fitting for a little girl so I was wondering if we can do it faster. I don’t know if he can heal from it!”
“You do understand how idiotic it is, right?” The doctor said and rolled back in his office chair. He put his elbow on the desk and his head in his hand.
“Well…” Impact added.
“That’s why I wanted to come here to talk to you first,” Static said. “What do you think? Is that something we can do?”
“No! It’s not idiotic because of the massive trauma you want to cause him. It’s idiotic because I just thought about something we all should have thought of already…”
Everyone looked to him, quietly, waiting for his next words.
“Avatar’s ability to change shape works from the outside in, including the clothes he’s wearing, right?”
There was a second and a half ot quiet as the words filled the room.
“Fuck…” Static said.
Impact started laughing.
Shutdown facepalmed.
“Well… at least I don’t need to give an arm and a leg,” Avatar added, trying to smile.
“I should have known that the one who’s supposed to be the smartest on the team is actually the dumbest!” Impact said.
“I never claimed to be the smartest,” Shutdown raised his hands defensively.
Avatar stood in the middle of the examination room, on a scale they moved there. He took of his shirt. Livenstein stood behind him with a clipboard and occasionally took notes. Static and Shutdown stood around him and watched the process. Impact leaned on the wall near the door, eating a carrot in small bites and chewing as quietly as she could.
Livenstein leaned forward and moved some weights on the scale. “130 grams,” He said. “Now try something heavier like… a motorcycle jacket.”
“Okay,” Avatar said and seemed to shake off something invisible, finishing with a big shrug. Silvery liquid came out of his skin all across his shoulders, the base of his neck and his trapezoids. It covered him down to the tips of his fingers and his waist line. He seemed to puff up a bit and then the liquid started absorbing back into him, leaving behind a big leather jacket with metallic spikes on the shoulders, and a collar that reached up to his chin. Under the open jacket, Avatar wore a black T shirt with a giant skull on it, sticking its tongue out and surrounded by roses, snakes, and wings.
“Cool design,” Impact commented while Livenstein leaned again to look at the scale.
“If there was a weight difference, this thing can’t measure it,” The doctor said out loud. “I think I saw the scales move but I’m not one hundred percent on it. Ok, take off the jacket.”
Avatar took of the jacket and the shirt and threw them on the same pile as the previous shirt. Livenstein checked the scales again. He moved some of the little weights until they balanced and then wrote in his notes.
“One kilogram and seven hundred and one grams,” He said. “A little light for a serious motorcycle jacket. You can do better,” He gave a very light and slow punch to Avatar’s shoulder, just to make his point. “But I think you get it.”
“This is really disturbing,” Impact said and bit her carrot again.
“I wasn’t really sure this would work,” Shutdown added, his face expressing surprise for himself and for Impact.
“This opens up so many possibilities…” Static said and rubbed her face.
“I really hope this is reversible,” Avatar said, looking up at everyone. He still stood on the scale that showed 31 kilograms and 320 grams. He was slightly taller than a meter. He tried to rearrange his mass so he won’t be too bulky but it was wierd anyway. At the side of the room was a pile of leather jackets in various sizes.
“Let’s go. We have serious plans to make,” Static said decisively and walked out.
Shutdown made a face of uncertainty and just follow what the team leader says.
After both of them left, Impact kept looking at Avatar. “Just watch yourself, ok?” she said, in a show of emotion very few ever seen. She nodded her head shortly and sharply, expressing that she said what she wanted and it was good and right and she can go now.
Avatar leaned on the scale and turned to Doctor Livenstein. “Keep the…” He looked over to the pile of jackets, “Whatever this is. I might need them back.”
“No problem,” Livenstein said.
His gaze followed the shape shifting Gifted that created a simple shirt for himself on the way out. He looked at the pile of jackets and studied it for a long moment. He rolled back to his desk, picked up the phone reciever and punched in a number he knew very well. He turned left and right in his chair waiting for the call to be answered.
“Daphna,” He said to the phone, “It’s Menashe. I have something I want you to check for me.”
