“The plaza is clear. Repeat, the plaza is clear,” Lahav said over the com. The strapped jaw microphones made it possible for him to be clearly heard by anyone on this channel though he spoke not much louder than a whisper. “Desty is green for target approach.”
“Roger that, post 2,” Iris’ voice came over the link, unnaturally modulated but clear and recognizable. “Continue sweep.”
So he swept, moving the XM-28’s telescopic sights from window to door to terrace and back to– “Hold on. Got activity in slot, eh… 24A. It looks like a convenience store hold up. I think I can handle it,” Lahav said as he moved his crosshairs onto the robber. He zoomed in and switched to microwave.
“Is it a danger to the operation?” Iris intoned harshly.
“On a scale of one to ten? 0.23.”
“Leave it. We’ve got our own problems.”
“I should really do something. Someone might get hurt.”
“Don’t branch off! We need the cover.”
“It’ll just take a second.”
“No. Did you hear me? No way. Lahav. Lahav!”
He didn’t quite listen anymore because he aimed. The smart targeting computer was already compensating for range, altitude, angle and environmental parameters but Lahav aimed a little higher because he knew the gun wasn’t thinking beyond the glass impact.
Pfft! The weapon said and jerked. A second or two later, Lahav saw the glass brake as the bullet charged through it. As expected, the glass slowed the projectile and it hit slightly below the reticule but exactly where he meant it to, in the back of the knee.
The robber’s leg lurched and then crumpled and, as if the ground slipped from under him, he fell to the floor, pistol in the air.
“All done. ETA… Four minutes, thirty five seconds. Plaza is still clear.”
“I’m gonna hurt you. A lot.”
