“מה אתם רוצים שאני אעשה?” איתן לקח צעד אחד אחורה משלושת הנוטרים.
“אנחנו רוצים שתיקח את היכולת שלו,” סטטית אמרה, רגועה לחלוטין.
“מה? איך?”
“היכולת שלך. אתה מחליף גוף עם מי שאתה מנשק. האם יצא לך לעשות את זה ואז לעשות את זה שוב אבל לא עם הגוף המקורי שלך?”
“אה… לא.”
“אז אין תקדים. בכל מקרה, מכל המחקר שיש לנו עד עכשיו, ההנחה היא שהיכולות שלנו הן משהו גנטי, מוטמע בגוף, בדם ובמוח שלנו. אבל היכולת שלך יכולה לשנות את כל התפיסה הזאת, או לפחות להגדיר סוג אחר של מחוננים. השאלה היא, האם אתה מעביר את היכולת שלך להחליף גוף כשאתה עושה את זה או שאתה תלוי בכך שהגוף המקורי שלך מחזיק את היכולת? ואם אתה כן מעביר את היכולת שלך איתך, האם אתה מעביר את כל היכולות מאותו הגוף או רק את שלך? אי אפשר לבדוק דבר כזה בלעדיך ובלי מחונן שמבין, מסכים, ומקבל את העובדה שאם זה יעבוד, הוא לא יהיה מחונן יותר.”
איתן נשען על הסורגים עם ידו מעל ראשו ובהה אל תוך התא, בוחן את רגב. רגב ישב בישיבה מזרחית בפינה ונשען קצת הצידה כדי שיוכל להסתכל על כל המבקרים שלו. סטטית נשענה עם כתפה על הסורגים ושילבה את זרועותיה.
“אז מה אתה אומר?” היא הביטה מאיתן אל רגב. “תעשה לו טובה?”
איתן לקח נשימה עמוקה ושחרר אותה כאנחה כבדה. “כן,” אמר. “במקרה הכי גרוע, זאת עוד הזדמנות לשתות בפעם הבאה שמשחקים ‘מעולם לא’.”
“What do you want me to do?” Eitan stepped back from the three Nottrim.
“We want you to take his Gift,” Static said, completely calm.
“What? How?”
“Your Gift. You switch bodies with the person you’re kissing. Did you ever do it and then again but not with you original body?”
“Ah… no.”
“Then there’s no precedent. Anyway, from the research we have now, the assumption is that our Gifted our genetic, inherent in our body, our blood, and our brain. But your ability could change that conception, or at least define a new type of Gifted. The question is, do you transfer your ability to switch bodies when you do it or are you dependent on the fact that your original body has that ability? And if you do transfer the ability with you, do you transfer all the abilities from the same body or just your own? We can’t test this without you and without a Gifted that understands, agrees, and accepts the fact that if we’re right, they won’t be Gifted any more.”
Eitan leaned on the bars, his hand over his head, and stared into the cell, looking over Regev. He sat cross-legged in the corner and leaned slightly to the side so he could see all his visitors. Static leaned on the bars with her shoulder and crossed her arms.
“So, what do you say?” She looked at Eitan and then at Regev and back again. “Do him a favor?”
Eitan stood back straight and took a deep breath. He let out a big sigh.
“Yes,” he said. “Worst case, it’s another drinking opportunity next time we play ‘Never Have I Ever’.”
