<><</silently>>The master of the order towers before you. He is a tall man with a bushy grey beard in a comfortable travel cloak. He looks up from his book at you, the last in line of new recruits.
"$playerName, is it? Welcome to the Loominal Order.
You've probably already heard this but let's go through the usual spiel.
The Loominal Order is a group of knights championing the causes of equality, fairness and mutual understanding. We send out envoys to trouble spots to deal with strife and disorder in a civil way, finding the diplomatic and mutually agreed upon solution for any problem; and we also train up and coming young people for those duties.
Since you are new here, you will go through our usual training to become a knight of the order. It's already getting late so you should probably get some dinner and rest. Our quartermaster John will help get you settled. I'll see you tomorrow."
[[Come back the next day.]]You are woken up early in the morning and told to quicky wash and dress. Breakfast is served quickly and humbly. You join all the new recruits out in the courtyard at roughly the same hour as the sun has deigned to rise. The master of the order is already there, holding a big gnarled wood staff.
"Good morning," He says in his booming voice and then hoists his staff up to the sky. "This is a staff carved from the Thorbrash tree. Also known as the Singing Tree. Do any of you know why?"
[[Raise your hand]]
[[Stay silent]]"$playerName. Why is that?" The master addresses you, making sure everyone's attention is focused on you.
You take a step forward and clear your throat. "It's because the branches of the tree hum as they sway in the wind. Different patters of swaying produce different notes. And when carved correctly, staves made from the tree retain this property and are used by the Loominal Order for their Harmonies."
"Well spoken, $playerName," The master commends you.
[[Return to your place|Back in Place]]"Tess. Why is that?" The master said.
You turn to look at who he was addressing and see a mousy girl with auburn curles lowering her hand.
"It's because the branches of the tree hum as they sway in the wind," She says. "Different patters of swaying produce different notes. And when carved correctly, staves made from the tree retain this property and are used by the Loominal Order for their Harmonies."
"Well spoken, Tess," The master commends her.
[[Next.|Back in Place]]"The Singing Tree Staff is the main tool of the Loominary Knight," The master continues. "Our masterful crafters have already prepared one for each and every one of you but having a staff and using the staff are completely different things. And the first lesson of how to use the the staff, you will learn from the tree itself." And with that, the master turns and points up and behind him, beyond the monestary's walls, up the mountain, where the clouds and the myst obscure the peak and one can barely perceive of a clump of trees populating the very top of the rocky mass.
All the new recruits stare up in awe.
<<timedreplace 25>>[[Grab a staff and go.]]<<replacewith>>"Come on, people," The master booms again. "We're not going to wait here all day for you."
You and all the other recruits head towards the table lined with staves, [[grab one and head out the door]]<<endtimedreplace>>You scramble among the crowd of new recruits. You give up trying to find the best staff and settle for what ever you can lay your hands on. You make your way through the shambling, fearful recruits but as you find your pace, the same amount of people are ahead of you as are behind you.
The climb up the mountain becomes a trek as you have to contend not only with the uneven terrain increasing wind and cold but also with people with an uneven distribution of familiarity with mountaineering.
Through sheer force of will, you manage to arrive at the start of the mountain's vegetation with only a handful of recruits already there.
<<display [[The Trees>
[[Join the other recruits by the tree]]
<<silently>><><<set $fast = 1>>
<><</silently>>You rush out the door while the rest of the recruits just stare. You find the best looking staff you can and start running out of the monestary outer cloister, out of the grounds, up the narrow beaten path and straight to the top.
After a few minutes light jog you settle into a pace of fast long steps and bounds from packed dirt to rocks to gravel and by the time you reach the first signs of actual vegetation on the mountain, the other recruits are well behind you.
<<display [[The Trees>
[[Rush to the Tree]]You look ahead of you and see a carpet of thinly spread clumps of grass and weeds. Not 20 meters ahead of you is the first tree. It's short but stocky, with a wide trunk, embedded into the earth with several massive, overground roots. Its branches spread mostly wide rather than up and, despite their rugged and gnarled look, they sway in the gentle breeze like wind pipes. And now you understand that the low whistle you heard coming up the mountain was the branches producing their unique melody.<<audio "sound1" play>>As you gingerly step towards the tree, trying to get as close as you can without stepping on roots, you pay special attention to the branches, the one the staves are carved from.
<<display [[The Branches> You track the movement of the branch over several cycles and by the time the rest of the recruits arrive you think you have it.
[[Wave the staff in a gentle circular motion in front of you]]
<<audio "sound1" play>>You try to get close to the tree among the recruits crowding it. You watch the branches like they do, following their movement patterns.
<<display [[The Branches>
Then one of the recruits yells "I got it!" and starts waving his staff gently in front of him. The low, humming whistle, emanates from his staff and soon all the others are doing the same. It was on the tip of your tongue. You would have figured it out on your own if you had a minute or two more to think.
[[Wave the staff in a gentle circular motion in front of you]] <<silently>><><<audio "sound1" play>>
<><</silently>><<if $fast eq 1>>Soon the rest of the recruits crowd around you, watching you play the simply solitary note. Then they join you, copying your movements, all together producing<<else>>You join the rest of the recruits in waving the staff and all together you produce<<endif>> a thundering harmony that, above everything else, makes you feel calm and serene.
[[Return to the monestary]]
Just like the staves, the branches are firm, rough and gnarly but have a distinctive pattern of holes. And as they move, you can imagine the wind passing through those holes, back and forth, winding its way through the branch, producing the gentle whistle you hear. You and all the recruits take a more measured pace down from the mountain. You arrive back at the inner cloister as the sun is setting. The master of the order steps out of the front doors to meet you. As he walks to the center of the yard, you all arrange yourselves in front of him as you did this morning.
"Well," The master says. "What have you learned?"
<<if $fast eq 1>>You smile and say<<else>>One of the other recruits says<<endif>> "Ready and..." and you all <<click "start waving your saves gently infront of you">><<stopallaudio>><<audio "sound1" play>><</click>> producing a long constant hum that would shake the very foundations of this millenia old structure if it weren't for its calming effect. The humming goes on for a few more seconds and then begins to die out as each single recruits stops his staff and holds it firm.
"Well done. You have made your first steps to becoming a Loominary Knight. Treasure these moments and hold your staff firm. Go inside now, a hearty meal awaits you," and the master motions with his hands to the big double doors.
And as you lay down in your bed at the day's close, your staff by your side, you can't help but think of all your future endeavours and all the things you might accomplish.
