Today’s Lucky Ten Thousand
XKCD rolled out a comic not long ago about something that is very near to me. I know that there are some things that I know and other people don’t. Actually, most people don’t. I hear about it almost every day, practically every week. I know a lot, my T’s head is very wide (I’ll get to that momentarily) but I really try not to make fun of people or condescend the fact that I know stuff. I can also admit that there are things I don’t know or don’t get: Like finance or Computation Theory. But when there comes a time when I know something and other people don’t, I do my best to explain it. Because it’s fun. It’s fun to explain, it’s fun to see understanding and it’s especially fun because it enables more fun when there are more knowledgeable people. So what are we doing today… Heat Death – is one possible scenario for the end of the universe and, in fact, one of the more likely ones and one most touted (claimed to be, spread around, shouted from the roof tops) in science in general. The theory basically states that the universe is expanding and, as there are not other apparent affectors, will continue to expand until all the energy present in the universe will be smooth and spread so thin that everything will achieve a consistent temperature close to absolute zero and thus all thermodynamic activity will cease and not more changes can occur. בהמשך לפעם שעברה, הנה קטע מעניין על המונופול האמיתי באזור מערכות ההפעלה. MINDSHARE The U.S. Government’s assertion that Microsoft has a monopoly in the OS market might be the most patently absurd claim ever advanced by the legal mind. Linux, a technically superior operating system, is being given away for free, and BeOS is available at a nominal price. This is simply a fact, which has to be accepted whether or not you like Microsoft. Microsoft is really big and rich, and if some of the government’s witnesses are to be believed, they are not nice guys. But the accusation of a monopoly simply does not make any sense. What is really going on is that Microsoft has seized, for the time being, a certain type of high ground: they dominate in the competition for mindshare, and so any hardware or software maker who wants to be taken seriously feels compelled to make a product that is compatible with their operating systems. Since Windows-compatible drivers get written by the hardware makers, Microsoft doesn’t have to write them; in effect, the hardware makers are adding new components to Windows, making it a more capable OS, without charging Microsoft for the service. It is a very good position to be in. The only way to fight such an opponent is to have an army of highly competetent coders who write equivalent drivers for free, which Linux does. עוד שתי מנות של RadioLab
אני רוצה לקחת את הזמן ולהמליץ על עוד שתי תוכניות נהדרות, לדעתי, של RadioLab. אחת בשל מגניבותה והרעיון המטורף שמאחוריה והשנייה כי הרעיון שהיא מציגה מעניין וצריך לדעתי לעניין כל אחד. הראשונה, War of the Worlds, מדברת, כמובן, על התוכנית המפורסמת של אורסון וולס המבוססת על ספרו המפורסם של ה.ג’. וולס. והייתי רוצה לכתוב פה משהו מגניב עליה אבל זה כנראה יהרוס את האפקט של התוכנית ואני לא רוצה לעשות את זה. התוכנית מנסה להעביר את איך המופע הזה נתפס בזמנו, איך הוא השפיע על אנשים ומה הוא גרם להם לחשוב, לראות ולעשות. זאת תוכנית של שעה אבל יכולה לספק לכם חומר לשיחה לחודש הבא. מומלץ. השנייה, The Obama Effect, Prehaps, מדברת על פיסת סטטיסטיקה מעניינת שנקראת Stereotype Threat ועל הקשר המעניין בין בחירת ברק אובאמה לנשיא ארצות הברית ובין עלייה בתוצאות המבחנים של אנשים אפריקאים-אמריקאים. זאת תוכנית של רבע שעה בערך וגם מאוד מעניינת בגלל ההשלכות של הרעיון.

Dharma of Car, Over
זה קרה ביום שלישי ורציתי לכתוב משהו על זה מאז אבל לא ממש מצאתי את המילים. אני לא יודע מה לכתוב. גם עכשיו, אני לא ממש יודע מה המשפט הבא יהיה, אני פשוט מנסה להיזכר. אני לא נקשר לחפצים. לא באמת. אני משתדל שלא להיקשר. כי אם נקשרים אז קל מאוד להיפגע. אז אני אומר לעצמי שדברים הם רק דברים. הם משרתים את מטרתם עד שהיא נגמרת או שהם נגמרים. אבל מדי פעם יש דברים, יש מכונות, כל כך מתוחכמות שאי אפשר שלא להאניש אותם קצת, אי אפשר שלא להתייחס אליהם בחיבה, כמעט יותר ממכונה. אני נותן למחשבים שלי שמות, שמות לפי גורמים שמימיים, כי אז קל יותר להתייחס אליהם וכי זה נותן להם מעט יותר משמעות. אז Outlaw היה המחשב האחרון שהיה משותף לי ולאחים שלי. טרה הייתה המחשב הראשון הפרטי שלי שקניתי ב-2002. עכשיו היא משרתת את ההורים שלי בתור HTPC. לונה הייתה המחשב הנייד הראשון שלי והיא נפטרה בלי תרועות גדולות מדי לפני יותר מחצי שנה. עכשיו אני משתמש בדיימוס. פובוס הוא המחשב הנייד של מעין שהשאלתי לזמן קצר. ולא מזמן התקנו את Quicksilver אצל ההורים שלה כדי שיהיה לנו מחשב שם. היילי הוא הטלפון שלי. הליוס היה המכונית הראשונה שלי. אמרתי שקוראים לו הליוס ושהוא אוטו לא מכונית. אבל זה לא באמת שינה. כמה פעמים צריך להתייחס לאוטו בשם? קניתי אותו ב-2007 מידי בן אדם נחמד מבית שאן. הוא היה אוטו של אנשים זקנים, לא נסע הרבה, לא עשו בו יותר מדי שימוש. והוא הפך להיות אוטו של צעיר חובב מירוצים. חיבבתי אותי כי הוא היה Continue Reading →
