considering the materials you can find within a university its ridiculous to think you will really need to bring anything harmful inside.
and if you had tried to bring harmful materials you could say its for your research and no guard can prove you wrong so what’s the point?

honestly sometimes I think this whole surveillance craze its really stupid.

ironically you want the following, a system that before the gate automatically takes invasive pictures of the car and identifies … whatever the hell they are looking for in your trunk

the secound system should be a simple rfid imbedded into the car and a scanner on the gate, is the rfid checks out with the database gate opens, otherwise gate stays closed
if you prefer a barcode on the car with a laser scanner that good too, but rfid is more tech

the reason we need the invasive scanner and army doesn’t, they trust there troops, if you try it and you not army it won’t work

just look at what happened the time “top gear” tried to drive a trojan horse into a military base, you have to be military or else they won’t trust you 

in short, until they find what they think they misplaced in some trunk(probably at 3-am, probably while drunk) were out of luck
